A 14-year-old faces a hate-crime enhancement charge after Palm Bay police said he carried out a racially motivated attack on a 22-year-old man for listening to rap music.
The teen was taken into custody late Monday and charged with battery after Palm Bay police were called to investigate a disturbance near the intersection of Port Malabar Boulevard and India Lane in the northeast section of the city.
Hate-crime enhancement means the first-degree misdemeanor battery charge could be elevated to a third-degree felony because the youth showed “extreme prejudice against the victim because of his race,” said Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department.
“The victim, who is white, was walking along Port Malabar listening to rap music when he saw the suspect and a group of other youth,” Martinez said.
The 14-year-old, who police say may have known the man, told the man to stop listening to the rap music, “because he was white,” and that, “white people shouldn’t listen to rap music,” Martinez said.
“(The victim) then told them that he could listen to any kind of music he liked,” Martinez said.
The teen struck the victim in the face as the other youth encouraged the attack, police said. The beaten man escaped and contacted police. He later identified the teen, Martinez said. The teen was then booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
The state attorney’s office will review the charges.

A cop involved in the fatal shooting ofSean Bellon his wedding day is now suing the dead man’s estate — claiming Bell drunkenly assaulted and badly injured him with a car right before the hail of police gunfire that brought the unarmed man down.
Police Officer Michael Carey’s lawsuit says Bell was boozed-up when he got behind the wheel of the car after his bachelor party on Nov. 25, 2006, and also claims the doomed groom failed to wear glasses or contact lenses despite having poor eyesight.
Carey’s allegations are contained in a Brooklyn federal counter-claim filed last week in response to a wrongful-death lawsuit being pursued by Bell’s fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell, against him and the other four cops involved.
“[Officer Carey] suffered serious leg injury when [Bell] crashed into the vehicle he was riding in before Officer Carey ever drew his gun and fired a shot,” said Carey’s lawyer, Richard Signorelli.
Bell, 23, and his entourage were shot at 50 times by five officers, including Carey, after they left a strip joint, Club Kalua, in Jamaica, Queens.

A few months back we reported that Rihanna was having a VERY hardtime selling tickets to her concert (with pop star Ke$ha). Well last week, she announced that she would have to cancel dates in Arizona and in Dallas.
The insider said, “Rihanna’s people came up with some BS story that they were canceling the Arizona show because of some immigration protest… That was a lie. It was because she couldn’t sell more than a third of the tickets.”
Allegedly, the entire tour is in peril. The tipster explained, “The entire tour is starting to look like it willy LOSE money. 9 times out of 10, when promoters realize a tour is a money loser, it gets cancelled.”

Federal agents trying to build an extortion case against Joran van der Sloot secretly gave him the cash that wound up funding his trip to Peru, where he killed a young woman exactly five years after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, The Post has learned.
Van der Sloot tried to shake down Holloway’s mother by offering information about her daughter’s 2005 disappearance, and agents decided to set him up with a $25,000 payoff, a source told The Post yesterday.
An intermediary acting under the direction of the FBI gave van der Sloot the dough in Aruba on May 10 — and four days later, he flew to Peru, where he allegedly murdered 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room.
Van der Sloot was free to travel because after the money was given to the 22-year-old Dutch national, the feds didn’t promptly file charges against him. US authorities also did not ask that he be detained in Aruba, even after officials there warned that he was about to leave the island, the source said.
The failure to stop van der Sloot shocked and infuriated Holloway’s mom, Beth Twitty. She had been “told that an arrest was going to happen before he left” Aruba, where he was the last person believed to have seen Holloway alive when she vanished, the source said.
Van der Sloot took his payola from the feds — a $15,000 wire transfer and $10,000 in cash — and went to Peru to play poker, the source said.
